In the field of personality psychology there are currently six main approaches (Trait, Biological, Psychoanalytical, Behavioral, Cognitive and Humanistic) that attempt to explain personality from differing perspectives. Some of these systems are compatible while others seem irreconcilably polar. Perhaps what is missing is a unifying paradigm that is large enough and elegant enough to make sense of all approaches. Dr. Thomas discusses how the Enneagram might serve as a framework that unites the six current approaches of personality psychology. This could lead to a richer understanding of personality psychology and the Enneagram for both personal growth and improved clinical intervention.
